Read an excerpt from Chapter 2
"I can't go to prison for this Luke. Do you understand me? I am
not going down for this," he said.
"What are you saying Jimmy, that we leave him in the freezer
with the pizza and wings for God's sake?" I asked. "Don't you
think that someone is going to come looking for this guy?"
"I don't know okay, I don't know!" he spouted. "All I know is that
I am already on probation for attempted murder and I've got a
dead guy in my freezer with a slit throat of all things. That
doesn't exactly help my situation any."
"I can't go through this again Luke. I can't even take the risk,
especially if Stephanie's old man gets his nose into it and you
know he will somehow."
Just then Jimmy looked and stared at me as if I was supposed to
read his mind. I did.
"No Jimmy, I don't know man," I said with a flood of thoughts
racing back into my head. "I was just kidding around. It's not
like anything like this would ever happen," I told him.
What Jimmy was thinking about was a conversation that we had a
few years back and that we would continue to laugh about once in
a while, but was suddenly not so funny.
I had told him that if he had ever accidentally killed anyone, not to
worry about it. I had told him that I would simply take the body to
our crematory at the Fog Lake funeral home and cremate all of
the evidence.
"Just think about it man," he said. "We can keep him for a few
days and just see if anyone starts to look for him. We find out
who he is and what his situation is and go from there. Maybe he is
someone real low profile or something," he continued. "You
never know."
I decided that my next move would be to look into the freezer. I
wasn't too worried about it because I would see death every day
as well as just about every kind of disfigurement you could think
of.
When I opened the door however, my heart dropped and my
knees weakened as I held onto the door handle for support. It
wasn't seeing a dead person that shocked me, it was seeing a
friend. It was...
